Rose Martha Smith was born in Brooklyn, Lee County, Illinois prior to relocating to Adair County, Iowa where she married Charles Alva Forbes April 24, 1869. The married coupled relocated to Oswego County, New York where they raised their family of 5 children. Rose lived to be 94 years old. During her later years reporters from the Oswego Palladium interviewed her and published her memories to be read. Rose maintained a keen memory and remembered her days moving in a covered wagon from Illinois to Iowa. Her father Erastus Smith died in Greenwood Valley, El Dorado County, California mining gold with his brother David Smith, and her mother Jane Ross Smith remarried to Isaac Cade.
