"Fred" was born on the Backman farm at "Dale" Eglon Township, Clay County, Minnesota to John (Johannes Andersson) Backman and Mary Lisa Nilsdotter Backman. He grew up there and on October 6, 1920 he was married to Emma Mathilda Oberg. They were the parents of one daughter, Doris and three sons, Donald, Raymond and Fred. Raymond died as a toddler. Fred died at the age of 92 in a hospital in West Seattle, King Co. Washington. He was returned to Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, North Dakota for burial next to Emma.
