Mrs. Thornton was born on October 13, 1924, in St. Albans, the daughter of Henry and Winnifred (Church) Bruley. She grew up in St. Albans, where she graduated from St. Albans High School, Class of 1941.
She married S. Ray Thornton in St. Mary's Church in St. Albans on August 30, 1952.
She had worked for the Franklin Trust Company in St. Albans for a few years. She and her husband moved to Underhill to try their hand at farming before they moved to Brandon in 1969. She worked at the First Brandon National Bank for over 25 years, retiring in 1994.
Velma was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Brandon and served as treasurer of St. Mary's Cemetery in Brandon for many years. She was a member of Court Our Lady of Good Help, Catholic Daughters of America in Brandon, and volunteered at the Brandon Thrift Shop in Brandon.
Her hobbies included reading, sewing, scrapbooking, baking and spending time with family and friends.
Velma is survived by her children, Mark R. Thornton and his wife, Robbin of Omaha, NE, Shane A. Thornton and his wife Lisa of Middletown Springs, VT, Lance P. Thornton and his wife Charlotte of Simpsonville, SC, Mary Beth Chartrand and her husband Dan of Rutland, VT, and Todd A. Thornton and his wife Tina of Forest Dale, VT; a sister Wanieta Newcity of Burlington, VT; 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband S. Ray in 1997, a brother Carlton Bruley, and a lifelong friend of 81 years, Gladys Barrett.
A Mass of Christian Burial "In Celebration of Her Life" will be celebrated Saturday, December 15, 2012, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church in Brandon. Reverend Albert "Skip" Baltz, former St. Mary's pastor, will be the celebrant. A graveside committal and burial service will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Brandon.
Friends may call at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home, 26 Franklin Street, Brandon, on Friday, December 14, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m.
