George E. Ondo, 86, Homer City, died Sunday September 18, 2011, peacefully in his home.The son of John and Elizabeth (Biers) Ondo, he was born February 16, 1925, in Indiana.George joined the United States Marines and served in World War II, from 1943 to 1946. As a Corporal, he saw action in the Pacific Theatre on Saipan and at Mt. Suribachi. He served as a machine gunner on Iwo Jima with the 3rd Division, 21st Regiment of the Marine Combat Engineers. His name is listed on the World War II Memorial in Indiana, PA.Upon returning from combat, George married his sweetheart, Ethel Sipos, in 1946, here in Indiana. George was then employed by the United Mine Workers. Later he began his own excavating business and became the Center Township Supervisor.Mr. Ondo was a member of American Legion, VFW, The 40 and 8, The Coral Graceton Sportsman Club, a member of the UMWA Operating Engineers number 66 and was an alumni of Indiana High School. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and quad riding. He was known for his yearly gardening and canning skills. George most treasured the time spent with his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren.Surviving is his wife, Ethel (Sipos) Ondo; children, Richard Ondo, Suzanne Mayes, Georgette Bokash and her significant other Brian Cline; daughters-in-law, Rebecca Ondo and her significant other Bernie Kalanavich, and Marlene Ondo; four grandchildren and their families; Gregory Ondo and his wife Andrea and their son Dominick; Heather (Ondo) Walbeck, her husband Rob, and their children, LaVada and Justin; Holly (Ondo) Benavidez, her husband Frank, and their children Domingo and Zoey; and Hillary Ondo; a sister, Evelyn Jack; and many committed nieces, nephews, and friends.Preceding George in death were his parents; children, Edward and Michael; son-in-law, Jeffrey Mayes (husband of Suzanne); brothers; John, Joseph, Paul, Michael, Andrew, and Stephen; sisters; Mary, Ann and Elizabeth; and Eric Tepper, fiance of Hillary Ondo.Friends will be received on Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 pm at the John A Lefdahl Funeral Home.Funeral service will be conducted Thursday morning, 11 am in the Lefdahl Chapel with Pastor Stan Webb, officiating with Military Rites provided by the Homer City American Legion. A brunch will follow the service in the Homer City American Legion.
