For 18 years, he was the principal and 6th grade teacher of Lincoln School in Murphysboro, Ill., having taught in other systems 16 years previously. Abernathie retired from the Murphysboro schools in May 1963. He and his wife moved to Cape Girardeau where he continued teaching.
Mr. Abernathie's avocation was music. Primarily a pianist, he had eight years of private instruction and additional instruction at Southeast Teachers, Cape Girardeau. He taught piano for 19 years, but had to stop teaching piano when he joined the Murphysboro grade school system.
In 1941, Mr. Abernathie wrote a Christmas hymn titled "Lord, Make Christmas Real to Me." However, he waited until World War II ended before submitting it for publication. It was published in 1947 by the Nordyke Publishing Co. of Hollywood, Calif.
