Kathryn passed away on December 2, 2012, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, IA after losing her battle with breast cancer. The family will greet friends at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines for a Memorial Gathering on Sunday, December 9, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. She is survived by her husband, Jeff; child, Jared of Des Moines; birth-mother, Marsha Smith of Clinton, IA; and brother Craig of Iowa City, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents Doris and Elroy Baumann of Merrill, WI. Kathryn spent her life and career in service to the Deaf Community first as a licensed Sign Language Interpreter and later as both administrator of Deaf Services Commission of Iowa and deputy director of the Iowa Department of Human Rights. She will be remembered as a devoted mother; loving wife; and loyal friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
