Rowena Todd Armentrout, 89, of Max Meadows, Va., passed away at Carillion New River Valley Medical Center on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012. She was born on Nov. 28, 1923, in Allegheny County, N.C.. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Olin F. Armentrout; her parents, Robert C. Todd and Elsie Collins Todd of Elk Creek, Va.; and sisters, Mabel Blew and Mildred Gibson.
Rowena was a graduate of Elk Creek High School and Radford University. She began her teaching career at Max Meadows High School and, after an interlude for starting her family, returned to teaching at Max Meadows Elementary. Her teaching career spanned 30 years and positively impacted numerous young lives. She was the glue in the family that selflessly supported her husband and children in all of their activities. She was as comfortable and skilled on the farm as she was in the classroom. Rowena was an active member of Max Meadows United Methodist Church and was a leader of United Methodist Women. She enjoyed gardening and sharing her bounty with others. During her retirement she worked in the Reagan and Bush White House as a volunteer, and helped in the development of a White House Cookbook and other activities such as the annual Easter Egg Roll.
Rowena strongly supported Olin in his community service work, especially pertaining to higher education. Together they established the Olin and Rowena Armentrout Scholarship at Wytheville Community College.
She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Ann and Dan Cooley of Elk Creek; and a brother, Bobby Todd of Elk Creek; her son, Mark Armentrout and wife, Debby, of Alpharetta, Ga.; and daughter, Susan King and husband, Ed, of Collierville, Tenn.; five grandchildren also survive, Judson Armentrout and wife, Katie, of Cincinnati, Joshua Armentrout and wife, Jennifer, of Atlanta, Carrie Hoffeditz and husband, Brad, of Indianapolis, Claire Armentrout of Alpharetta, Ga., and Jordan King of Nashville, Tenn.; and one great-grandson, Danner Judson Armentrout of Cincinnati.
The family received friends on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m., at Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville. The funeral service and celebration of her life was held on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Max Meadows United Methodist Church at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Rosa Slavik and Mr. Bryan Carper officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
