Marriage record revealed Nicholas Chapman and Sarah Selah married on December 17, 1787 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Nicholas was about twenty-nine and Sarah was about twenty when they married.

The 1780 census revealed Nicholas Chapman was living in Rowan County, North Carolina.

The 1790 census revealed they were living in Burke County, North Carolina. Household members: Nicholas Chapman (over 16), wife - Sarah, George & John (under 16) and Sarah.

The 1800 census revealed they were living in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Household members: Nicholas Chapman (26-44), Sarah (26-44), George & John (10-15) and James & Robert (under 10).

The 1810 census revealed household members: Nichs Chapman (45 & over), James (16-25), Robert (10-15), Joshua (under 10), Sarah (16-25), Mary (under 10) and eight slaves. *Error, his wife, Sarah (43) was not listed on the census.

The 1820 census revealed six household members were engaged in agriculture. They were living in Burke County, North Carolina. Household members: Archolas Chapman (45 & over), Sarah (45 & over), Joshua (16-25), one male (under 10), Sarah (26-44), Mary (10-15) and eight slaves.

The 1830 census revealed household members: Nic Chapman (70-79), Sarah (60-69), one male (10-14), and six slaves.

{{Pension Application dated July 23, 1833 revealed Nicholas Chapman (75) lived in Rowan County, North Carolina when he volunteered to serve in the Army in the Revolutionary War.

First - (October 1778 to Mar 1779), he was to serve five months as a private with Capt. James Nichols with Gen. Rutherford's Militia Regt in North Carolina. Circumstances required them to serve six months.

Second - (fall of 1779), he was to serve three months but two of the months he was awagoneer.

Third - (spring of 1780), he served for 22 days guarding prisoners.

After his service, Nicholas lived in Rowan County for eight years, Rutherford County for one year, Burke County for three years and Lincoln County for twenty years before settling in Burke County.}}
