Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer (Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois), Tuesday, January 2, 1934:
Joseph A. Barnett, former circuit clerk of Madison County and member of one of the county's oldest families, died Sunday night at 5:55 o'clock at St. Elizabeth's Hospital at Granite City from a fractured skull which he suffered on Christmas Day. During the past week he underwent an operation to relieve pressure but extent of the fracture prevented giving him relief.
Mr. Barnett was driving along Route 4 west of Edwardsville at the time of the accident. He was coming into Edwardsville when one of the wheels of the car slipped from the pavement. In steering the car back to the pavement the machine skidded in front of another machine going in the opposite direction. Owing to Mr. Barnett's unconscious condition he was unable to give an account of what happened.
The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from Marks-Weber Funeral Home. Dr. J.W. Cummins of St. John's M.E. Church had charge. Burial was made at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those serving as pallbearers were Earl Herrin, Otis Barnett, L.H. Greathouse, A.H. Stubbs, Taylor Wells and Louis May.
The Barnett family was among the first settlers in Hamel township. Alfred P. Barnett, father of Joseph A. Barnett, was born in Hamel township in 1833. The birth of the son occurred on October 31, 1862, Mr. Barnett being 71 years and two months old at the time of his death.
The father had an estate of 600 acres and was engaged in stockraising. The son remained on the farm until a young man. He graduated from the Edwardsville High School and then entered Chicago Veterinary College where he graduated in 1891. He followed the profession of veterinarian for 17 years.
In 1907 he was chosen to complete an unexpired term of circuit clerk and was elected for a full term of four years. Later he lived in Florida for a time and was employed at Taylor Wells Tire Company for several years. For about ten years he was connected with Joseph Kesl & Sons, Edwardsville road builders.
In 1899 he was married to Miss Elizabeth White of Edwardsville. The widow, four brothers and a sister survive, R.N. and John A.P. Barnett of Edwardsville; George K. Barnett, Portland, Ore., and Oscar Barnett and Mrs. May Sterling of Texas, are the brothers and sister.
