Rufus Newton Barnett passed away Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Villa Terrace Nursing home in Alton where he had been a patient for the past 14 months. A carpenter by trade, he helped build many of the older homes in this city.
He was born in Hamel township Sept. 20, 1868, and had reached the age of 82 years, six months and 20 days. With the exception of a few years spent in Shelbina, Mo., during his early married life, he was a lifelong resident of Madison county. His parents, Alfred P. and Mary Ellen Kinder Barnett, were pioneer residents of Hamel township.
He was married to Fannie B. McKittrick on Oct. 20, 1890. His wife and one daughter, Jennie, preceded him in death.
He is survived by one son, Joseph R. Barnett of this city; three daughters, Mrs. Carrie Eberhart of this city, Mrs. William (Bessie) Krome of Edwardsville township, Mrs. William (Cora) Homann of Ft. Russell township; two brothers, John A.P. Barnett of Alton, George K. Barnett of California; three grandsons, Kenneth Homann, Charles Eberhart of this city, Elmer Krome of Alton; three granddaughters, Mrs. Tilden Helmich, Mrs. Roy Radcliffe, Mrs. Edd Jones, Jr., of this city; and three great granddaughters, Judith Ann Krome, Sharon Ann Homann and Theresa Lee Jones.
Friends may call at the Marks-Weber funeral home after 12 noon Thursday until Friday at 10 a.m. when services will be held from the funeral home.
Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
