James was the 3rd child and 2nd son born to James and Sarah Ann (McElheny) Campbell. He was the 1st child born in In. after James had moved his family here in 1838. His brother, Peter A. had been born in Pa. in 1834 where his parents were married, and his sister Mary Jane was born in Oh. in 1836. The 1870 census lists him living at the Sheman House Hotel, single, and a clerk in a Dry Goods Store ( Probably his brother Peter's ). In the 1880 census, he is married to a Catharine N. who was born in Ky., age 33 , and children: Mary D.,age 9; John H.,age 8; James F.,age 6; and David D.,age 4. I do not know where of when he died, but he was listed as living in Newport,Ky. in his sister Sarah's Obit on 20 Sep.,1893 and as living in Covington,Ky. in his sister Matilda's Obit on 11 Aug.,1914.

In the 1900 Campbell Co.,Ky. census, he is listed as a landlord, living in Newport,Ky.,married for 31 years, living with his wife, Kate b. Jan.,1847 age 53 and daughter Mary b, July,1870, age 29 and single.
