Peter was the first born child and son of James and Sarah Ann (McElheny) Campbell. He was born in Pa., where his parents were married on 11 Apr.,1833. He was a very well known merchant here in Washington,In. operating a Dry Goods Store like his father. His newspaper adds say his store was on the corner of 3rd and main St. He married Catharine McDermot/McDermont who was born in Ireland. The 1870 census lists him as a Dry Goods Merchant with real estate worth $3000 and personal estate worth $3000. His children were: Mary age 7; Catharine age 6; Charles age5; John L. age 3; Sallie age 2; and James age 1 and 2 and 2 girls, Mary Gray age 11 born in New York and Catharine Fitzpatrick born in In. who may have been a servant. The 1880 census lists him as a Dry Goods Merchant with children: Mary C. age 17; Catharine age 15; Charles age 14; John age 12; Sarah age 10; James age 8; and Joseph age 5 and a servant named Florence Harris age 18. Peter must have died before his sister Sarah Ann Hayes because he isn't listed in her obit from the Washington Gazette of 23 Sep.,1893. Elizabeth at the Dav. Co. Library found an obit for Mrs. Peter Campbell from the 3 Feb.,1906 Washington Democrat which said:

Mrs. Peter Campbell Dead

A message from St. Paul,Minn. says that Mrs. Peter Campbell, who lived in Washington some twenty-three years ago, died in that city. She was about seventy-seven years old.

I'm not sure this is her because it would make her born about 1829 which would make her 5 years older than Peter.
