Jesse R. Chaves, age 84, of Westminster, died Tuesday November 27, 2012 at Carroll Lutheran Village. He was born July 9, 1928 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island son of the late Jesse C. and Laurentina Resendes Chaves. He was the husband of the late Pearl Cline Chaves, his wife of 47 years who died in October 2012. He was a member of St. Luke's (Winters) Lutheran Church in New Windsor. After graduation from DeLasalle Academy in Newport, he volunteered for the Navy. He returned to Rhode Island and attended the University there for two years before going to the University of Idaho where he received a B.S. in Geology. He then went to College Park, Maryland and received a M.S. in Agronomy from the University of Maryland. Jesse went to work for the Department of Transportation, U.S. Government as an engineer. In 1966 he got a M.S. in Photogrammetry from Syracuse University in New York and later did graduate work in Environmental Management at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. His hobbies included photography, travel, music (trumpet) and flying. He started with the trumpet at age 8 and continued through high school and didn't play for a number of years until retiring in 1982. After 30 years with the Federal Government, he started playing in local bands and directed a couple of his own. His travels included, the Caribbean Islands, and throughout the states and he lived in Peru for 3 years. He was a licensed pilot and had his own plane for 11 years. A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 2, 2012 at Carroll Lutheran Village, Krug Chapel with Rev. Jimmie L. Schwartz officiating. Inurnment will take place in Pleasant View Lutheran Cemetery, Staunton, VA at a later date.
