George served as a Corporal with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company F (Civil War). He also served as a private with the 133rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G.

The son of George & Anna Reiber, in 1860 he was a mason living in Spring Township, Perry County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County August 5, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. During October 1862 while stationed at Sharpsburg, Maryland, he was hospitalized and, after the regiment left area at month's end, transferred to a medical facility in Frederick, Maryland. He returned to duty December 26, 1862, and honorably discharged with his company May 26, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg, date unknown, mustered into federal service there September 5, 1864, as a corporal Co. F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

He married Mary Ann Dunkelberger October 1, 1867, and fathered Theodore Niven (b. 04/22/66), Alice S. (b. 04/04/70 - married John J. Braught), Sarah E. (b. 03/07/72, and James L. Diven (b. 06/18/75).
