Ernest Eugene Ashley, 64, Bemidji, died Tuesday evening at his home. Funeral services were at St. Philip's Catholic Church. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Ashley was born Nov. 2, 1920 at Sipe Springs, TX, the son of Ernest and Eva Ashley. He grew up and attended school at Wink, TX, and enlisted in the Navy in 1938. His marriage to Evelyn Booth Nov. 29, 1941 took place at Upper Marlboro, MD. They lived in New Jersey, Virginia, Illinois and Florida where he was stationed as an aviation technician chief in the Navy. After he retired from the Navy in 1958, they moved to Bemidji. He graduated from Bemidji State University with a degree in Spanish in 1961 and taught Spanish at Blackduck High School from 1961 to 1964. They moved back to Bemidji in 1965 and he taught Spanish at Bemidji State University until retiring in 1983. Since January 1984 he had been employed with Realty World. He was a member of Ralph Gracie American Legion Post and St. Philip's Church.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Ernest Jr. of Casper, WY, Gary of Vadnais Heights, and James of Mound; six daughters, Marilyn (Curtis) Pelarski of Forest Lake, Carol (Brian) DeBlieck and Theresa (Les) McLaughlin, both of Bemidji, Elizabeth (Russell) Bull of Racine, WI, and Margaret Ashley and Juanita Ashley, students at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; 18 grandchildren; and a sister, Iola Solomon of Bakersfield, CA. He was preceded in death by two sons, his parents and two sisters. (Bemidji Pioneer April 18, 1985)
