Two Killed in Landing At Edgemont Airport
Donald Ward, Lead, (SD)and James Barritt, Igloo, (SD) were killed instantly here yesterday morning when their plane crashed while attempting a landing at the city airport. Ward was the pilot of the aircraft, which witnesses said plummeted to the earth from about 500 feet altitude. The men were apparently on a pleasure ride. Ward had just met Barritt, a Black Hills ordnance depot employee, the night before and was taking him for his first plane ride. [Info about Ward omitted.] The Civil Aeronautics Administration is investigating.
Barritt was born July 7, 1922, at Thornton, WY. He previously worked at the National Lead Company at Bell Fourche until coming to the ordnance deport in March 1952. He was an ammunition renovator at BHOD and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife and three children, Connie, eight, Randy, six, and Danny, four.
