Abraham Strait, son of Mary (née Price) and Isaac Christian Strait, was born around 1815 in Plain Township, Franklin County, Ohio. Mary and Isaac Strait, both born in New Jersey, were early settlers of Franklin County.* The Isaac "Streit" household was enumerated in 1830 in Plain Township.


Abraham Strait and Mary Painter were married on 1 December 1836 in Franklin County. The ceremony was performed by Jefferson Township Justice of the Peace Jacob Smith. The couple became the parents of perhaps 13 children. Abraham and Mary Strait's family farmed in Jefferson Township (reporting land ownership in 1850 and 1870), and later in Mifflin Township. (An 1872 map of Mifflin Township shows a 38-acre plot belonging to A. Straight).


Abraham Strait died on 22 April 1877 in Liberty Township, Putnam County, Ohio, age 62 according to a county death register. He may have been visiting or staying with relatives there.† Mary Strait died on 20 June 1877 in Mifflin Township, reportedly age 64.


Burial


Burial place remains unknown. Possibly either Mifflin Cemetery or Riverside Cemetery, both near Gahanna, Mifflin Township, Franklin County. "Interment books for burials in the historic sections of both Mifflin and Riverside Cemeteries were lost in a fire many years ago," according to the Mifflin Township website.

An exact date of birth, 1 April 1815, is reported in many genealogies, but without a source. The 1850 through 1870 U.S. Censuses indicate a range from about 1812 to 1814. His 1877 death certificate has age 61, thus born about 1816.

For example: Lewis Devenport, "in the '20s he was married, and with his wife located upon a farm of ninety acres [...] Of this, forty acres had been purchased of his father, John Devenport, and fifty acres of Isaac Strait." Daughter Mary Jane was married in 1876 in Putnam Co., and enumerated in 1880 in the county's Van Buren Twp.


According to Ancestry.com. Ohio, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center Obituary Index, 1810s-2016 (citing the Putnam County Sentinel, Ottawa, Ohio, 26 Apr 1877, p. 3) Abraham "Straight," age 60 died on 22 Apr 1877 in Leipsic, Ohio.

Leipsic is in Putnam County's Van Buren Township, immediately east of Liberty Township (in which there is the village of West Leipsic).
