He served in the U.S. Army 747 Tank Battalion as a gunner during World War II from June 29, 1944, to April 16, 1947, when he received an honorable discharge. He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Gertrude "Gertie" Nezval; two sons and four daughters, Shirley Marie and husband, Philip Benard, of Byhalia, Miss., Clarence Michael and wife, Deborah, of Simpson, Patricia Ann and husband, John Wright, of Millington, Tenn.; Susan Delaine and husband, Ed Hodson, of Simpson, Rosa Lynn and husband, Chuck Hurt, of Burlison, Tenn., and Johnny Allen and wife, Beth, of Kernersville, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lucille Atherton and Alice White; one brother, Tommie; and one son, Kenneth Wayne.
Cremation was accorded by Southern Illinois Vault Company.
The family will receive friends for a celebration of life from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, in New Liberty Church.
