16 August 1846, in Brown Co., IL. Died, 31 August 1941.
"The following clipping concerning a member of an early pioneer family of Laclede and her marriage here 74 years ago, is from a Denison, Texas, newspaper and was received by Mrs. H.M. Jones. Mrs. Alexander is a sister of the late William, Henry and James Lomax. A resident of Denison three score years, Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander, 820 Bond street, was an intimate acquaintance during her girlhood of the family of General John J. Pershing and the latter, then a wee boy, was among the group of relatives and friends who witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth Lomax to Horace Alexander at Laclede, Mo., on Christmas of 1864.
Leaving Laclede with her husband immediately after their marriage, Mrs. Alexander has not seen General Pershing since his boyhood, but has closely followed his rise to international fame as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces during the World war and America's best loved military genius. Now 92 years old, the Denison woman remembers her gildhood days at Laclede when John Pershing and his brothers and sisters played with the children of the Lomax family, including George Lomax who was the father of Harry Lomax of Denison. Mrs. Alexander was married at the home of her parents and General Pershing the boy and his parents were among the guests who remained for the dinner that celebrated the nuptials.
Mrs. Alexander was born in Adams county, Illinois, near Quincy on Aug. 16, 1846, where her father was engaged in farming and also as a school teacher. Before the Civil war the family moved to Laclede where the father operated a general merchandise store. He served as a captain in the Union army under Grant and Sherman. Married to a railroad engineer, Mrs. Alexander moved from Laclede to Brookfield, Mo. They had been married hardly a year when Mr. Alexander was injured when his engine smashed through a bridge weakened by a swollen stream. She remembers the difficult trip she made to reach his side, traveling by rail and overland. Southern soldiers, then on their way home from the war, helped her ford a swollen river on a raft. After seven years at Kansas City, where Mr. Alexander was a railroad master mechanic, the couple came to Denison and the husband served the Katy as engineer and master mechanic until an injury forced his retirement. He subsequently was engaged in the real estate businesss and died here in 1920.
In good health despite her 92 years, Mrs. Alexander, who has been the mother of six children, is keenly interested in current events, explaining that "I always look ahead." She has been a member of the Presbyterian church many years. She is the mother of Guy Alexander of Dallas, and Mrs. Louise Cornell of San Diego, Cal., now engaged as an opera singer. She has a sister, Mrs. W.C. Love in California." [Laclede Blade, 11 November 1938]
