Benjamin was most likely born in Knox County, Ohio, the son of William and Mary (Kirby) Shoup.

He enlisted as a private in Company I, Ohio 20th Infantry Regiment on December 9, 1861 during the Civil War. He mustered out on January 27, 1865.

Benjamin married Eliza Howard on July 20, 1862 in Knox County, Ohio. The couple and their daughter, Frances, left Ohio in 1865 or 1866. Two more daughters, Sarah and Annie, were born in Iowa and Missouri respectively. The family was in Winfield, Lake County, Indiana by 1870 where Benjamin farmed. Nettie and Millie, were born during this time. The family shortly thereafter removed to Indian Creek, Anderson, Kansas, before returning to Indiana by October 1876, where Eliza died of consumption.

After the death of Eliza, he married Mary Clites on May 12, 1878 in Porter County. The couple settled in Hebron, in Porter County where Benjamin was a constable. This area is next to Winfield, in Lake County where Benjamin lived in 1870. Children from the union include: Earl, Harry, and Howard.
