Bertha Miller Rites Today
Funeral services for Bertha Stewart Miller will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m., at the Baptist church with the Rev. Harley Pulis officiating.
"Sunrise" and "Amazing Grace" will be the music during the ritual and pallbearers will be Frank Connor, Ollie Ludtke, H.C. Skidmore, Lou Hobson, Charles Sabo, and Frank Hyster. Interment will be at the Monument Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Miller died July 21, at the age of 75 of a heart attack at her home in Red Lane. She was Bertha Thomas May 27, 1882 in Centreville, Michigan. Her parents were Mary Jane and Alexis Thomas. After graduating from Kansas City General Hospital in 1907 as a trained nurse she married Hiram Jesse Steward May 19, of the same year.
The Steward's had no children and moved to Hot Springs County in 1908 where they filed on a homestead in the Missouri Flats area. The had charge of the County Farm for several years, and then moved and operated a small truck garden and chicken farm in Red Lane, where Mr. Steward passed away.
On Dec. 9, 1954, she married John Miller who is still surviving. Mrs. Miller was known by many as "Mon," though she had no children of her own. She was always happy and willing to adopt one or more temporarily as long as they wished to stay, some ford several years. She was a member of the First Baptist church.
Survivors include her husband, one step-daughter, Mrs. Eva Zorko of Red Lane; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth McCoy of Elkhart Indiana and Mrs. Mildred Lewis of Thermopolis; and one brother, Mr. Lex Thomas of Evansville, Wyoming.
