"William E. Dante, of East Worcester, was born at Quaker Street, Schenectady county, February 10, 1851. His father's ancestors emigrated to this country from Ireland, but were of Italian origin. His mother traces her descent from New England stock. The subject of our sketch secured his education in the common schools. During the Civil War he sold newspapers on the trains of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, and at a later period served as baggage and express messenger in the employ of the New York Central. From 1870 to 1878 he was occupied at various places along the line of the D. & H. road as telegraph operator. In 1878 he enlisted in the United States Government Signal Service, being employed at the chief office at Washington and acting also as meteorological observer at the Delaware breakwater, and at Cape May ... In 1886 he was married to Miss Lucy A. Miller of East Worcester, and to this union has been born one son. Mr. Dante is a member of the Masonic order, and politically is an ardent Republican. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1886. Two years later he was chosen as a member of the Board of Supervisors, and the same year was elected to represent the first Otsego district in the Assembly ..."
