Pioneer Passes at 95 Years of Age

Mrs. Charity Ann Berryhill, a resident of Montana for 44 years, passed away last Friday, Sept. 21, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. V. F. Dusenberry. She was born in Oxford, Ohio, in 1839 and was full-grown before the Civil war broke out. She remembered that great struggle vividly. Her husband, John Berryhill, was in the northern army. At the close of the war, she was married and emigrated to central Kansas, while the country was still so wild that the men carried their guns when they went to church, because of Indians. Later in the '80's, they emigrated to the Leadville district in Colorado. After residing a few years, they emigrated to Granite, Montana in 1890, which was then a boom camp. Here she lost her husband. She remained in this mining camp until after the great Exodus which occurred soon after silver was demonetized. Then, she with her children, moved to Butte, Montana. in 1895, where she spent the major portion of 18 years, except her residence at Spokane, Wash., Twin Bridges, Mont., and Basin, Mont. The last 21 years of her life was spent in Madison and Jefferson counties, living with her daughter, Mrs. V. F. Dusenberry on the North Boulder. She is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Ivy Collins of Portland, Ore., a granddaughter, Mrs. Victor Wilson, of Portland, Ore.; a great grandson, Victor Wilson, of Portland, Ore. A grandson, Elmer Fisher of Cardwell, Mont., and a brother, Joseph Osburn, of Carson City, Mich. She has many friends in several states and has seen the west change for three-quarters of a century. Interment was held at Basin and Christian Science services were read by Mrs. Geo. L. Johns. Pallbearers were" Wm. Thomas, Sr., and Wm. Thomas, Jr., of Butte and Wm. Knuckey, Faye Dusenberry, Jess Chambers, Buddy Chambers and Forbis Chambers of Cardwell.
