Irma Gates was born September 17, 1909 in Brockway Township, Stearns County, MN to Everett and Jennie (Hiscock) Perry. She obtained her rural teaching certificate from St. Cloud Teachers College in 1928 and taught in rural schools until 1933. She married Francis H. "Bob" Gates on August 12, 1933 in Rice, MN. She was an active member of Graham United Methodist Church and the American Red Cross. Irma was active in PTA at both Royalton and Rice schools. She also served on the Benton County Welfare Board from 1959 to 1967. She had been employed as a census enumerator. In 1978, Irma was certified in the Laubach Method of Training to tutor adults in the English language. Irma and Bob wintered in Mesa, AZ for 29 years, where she led exercise classes for over 20 years.
She was survived by 3 sons, 3 daughters, brother and sister, Wesley Perry and Edna Olson, 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Irma will be fondly remembered for her love of reading, her command of the English language, her ability to write humorous prose, her homemade rolls and coffee cake, her agility and ability to turn cartwheels until well into her sixties, and her gracious and loving way with all she met.
