Charles attended The Academy of Richmond County, circa 1783, a military boys high school in Augusta, Georgia. Upon graduation in 1873, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army's 18th Infantry stationed in Columbia, South Carolina.
After his discharge in 1876, Charles returned home to Aiken, South Carolina and married Lydia Ann Scott from Columbia. They had seven known children:

Around 1900, Charles moved his family to Washington, D.C. where he worked as a book binder at the Pentagon. When World War I broke out, Charles re-enlisted with the 164th Infantry; celebrating his 62nd birthday while fighting in France with the American Expeditionary Forces and serving with his youngest son, Stan. Charles remained in the Army until he was discharged on March 12th 1919.
Charles retired to southern California after Lydia's death and lived there until his death on February 23, 1934 in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, California.
