Erma was born to Lucy E (Hawks) Irons and Frank Townsend Irons on June 6, 1901 in Deadwood, South Dakota. Erma was the eleventh of twelve children. Erma's siblings were Vincent, Lulu, James, Ena, Ruby, Dudley, Leslie, Rea, Joseph, William, and Olga.
Three weeks after her birth Erma and her parents moved to Bowman, North Dakota in a covered wagon.
Erma married John Oscar Bergquist on October 30, 1920. Together they had ten children. There first child John Leroy Bergquist died as an infant in 1921. Erma and Oscar had six daughters; Erma Elaine, Shirley June, Juanita Ione, Elsie Maye, Karleen Marilyn, and Rebecca Jo and three sons; Gale Duane, Gerald Glenn, and Darrel Dean.
Erma and Oscar left Bowman, North Dakota in 1936 and settled in the the Longview, Washington area where they resided until their deaths.
Erma was a member of the Kalama Methodist Church. Services were held on December 30, 1967 at 10 am at the Ditleven-Moore Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gerald Bowers officiating. Interment was made in Cowlitz View Memorial Gardens.
