Raised and educated in Cooperstown, he was employed for the majority of his life by Earl C. John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown and the Native Sons of Cooperstown. He was also an institutional representative for the local Boy Scouts of America and was active with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego County.

John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth, a resident of Otsego Manor; two sons and daughters-in-law, James E. and Edna Chase of Fly Creek and David H. and Betty Chase of Hartwick Seminary; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and William Anton of Venice, Fla., and Mary and Bobby Richardson of Milton, Fla.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Connor, Anoel Kelly, William Anton Jr., Amy Chase and David H. Chase Jr.; six great-grandchildren, Amber and Benjamin Kelly and Nathan, Rachel, Brandon and Matthew Connor; one brother, Ernest W. Chase of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Lewis E. Chase, who died Nov. 6, 1973.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday night, June 9, 2005, when John's family will be in attendance.
