He was born in Sprague River to Charles Osborne and Annie Ethel (Johnston) Barker.
Jim lived in Brigham City, Utah; Worcester, Mass.; Twin Falls, Idaho; and Liberty District in Sweet Home while growing up.
In September 1950, he followed his older brother, Clayton, and joined the Air Force. He was stationed first at Lackland Air Force Base and then Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas for training. His first duty assignment was Williams Air Force Base in Arizona as an F-80 crew chief. While there he was injured and sent to Travis Air Force Base in California, where he was medically discharged in December 1951.
Following his discharge, he lived in northern Utah for several years before returning to Oregon. He worked for many years as a mechanic at various auto dealerships in Corvallis: Tharp Motors, Wayne Buck Chevrolet, Held Pontiac, and finally retiring from Jack Scoville.
He was a life member of the DAV Willamette chapter no. 17 and served two terms as commander and one term as chaplain.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nadine (Nicholson) Barker; half-brother John Tamasauskas and wife Lorrie; half-sister Louise (Tamasauskas) Weaver; daughter Virginia and husband Ken Stanley; sons James "Jimmie" Barker, and Jerry and wife Marilyn Barker; stepsons Dave and wife Peg Black, and Larry Dean Black and companion Donna Meng; stepdaughter Nancy (Black) and husband David Keaton; 14 grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including special niece Jane (Barker) and husband Bill Hills-Wilson; and special granddaughter Clemencia Torres.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Clayton Barker and Charles "Buck" Barker; sisters Charlotte (Barker) Collum, Delsa (Dee) Giles and Betty Jean Kerby; and stepson Ronald E. Black.
