John enlisted as a private for Civil War service in Company C, 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Aug. 14, 1862, at Cleveland, OH(Cuyahoga County) for a term of 3 years. Ocupation: Laborer. Resided Northfield Village in Cuyahoga County. At enlistment he claimed a wife and two children as dependents. He died in a hospital of illness at Lexington, KY, April 5, 1863.

His name is on Panel #13 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Squre, Cleveland, OH spelled as "Montayne."

His name was recorded as "Montoyne" in the Descriptive Book, Company C, and on his headstone; as "Montange" in the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Vol. V, pp. 520, 769; as "Montoney" in the 1850 U.S. Census; as "Montaney" in the 1860 U.S. Census; as "Montenge" on the Find A Grave Memorial submitted by the U.S. Government, and as "Montayne" in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument.

His pension application of what seems to be Nov. 12, 1885 lists minors, Jenkins, and Laura F., etal, Ohio.
