Margaret Jennings, or "Aunt Peggy" as she was known by her family, was born on November 6, 1794 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. She was the 2nd of nine children born to Jonathan Jennings and Elizabeth (Stephenson) Jennings Nixon.

Margaret emigrated with her family from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Washington County, Ohio in 1801. They traveled to Wheeling, West Virginia by wagons, and from that point floated down the river on a flat-boat. Her father had originally intended to settle on the Big Muskingum River, but mistook the Little Muskingum as being that river. They arrived the evening of March 6, 1801 and landed where LaFaver's Mill once stood.

Margaret's father built a cabin on the family farm and raised her and her siblings there. Her father died suddenly on November 2, 1808. Shortly afterwards her mother remarried to the also recently widowed William Nixon.

Margaret married her step-brother, George Nixon, son of William and Mary (Pettit) Nixon, on December 25, 1811 in Washington County, Ohio. They were united in marrige by Stephen Lindsley.

Together George and Margaret had three children: Jonathan Jennings, William, and George Nixon.

George died suddenly on January 10, 1816. Margaret remarried to Presley Petty, a veteran of the War of 1812, on July 23, 1817 in Washington County, Ohio.

Together Presley and Margaret had eleven children: Maria, Stephen, Margaret McNeal, Mary Amoney, Lydia Deliah, Rosanna, Betsey Jennings, Nancy, Henry W., and two infants.

Margaret was a member of the United Brethren Church and very active in the work of the church. In her earlier years she had been a Methodist.

Margaret died on January 27, 1881 in Washington County, Ohio. At the time of her death she was survived by nine of her children, a brother, two sisters, three half-siblings and numerous other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, three children, five siblings and one half-sibling. She was buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Washington County, Ohio.
