John Dunn Keating was born in Alexandria, District of Columbia (now Virginia) in 1812, the youngest child of James Keating and Mary Ann Dunn Keating. His father died that same year. John Dunn was shown in the 1820 census of Alexandria as a young male in his widowed mother's household with an older sister. In an old historical book of Alexandria the Keating house is noted on a map of the city. John Dunn grew up in the city, married Anna Marie Sanford and their son John Richard was born there in 1844. Three years later in 1847, they were in the small settlement of Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, when their second son, James Wooten, was born. John Dunn Keating was a shipper on the Red River and owned property in the old downtown area of Shreveport. He was killed in 1850, probably before the birth of his daughter, Martha Jane, in December. Probate records of his estate in the Caddo Parish Courthouse in Shreveport include a drawing of his downtown property. According to some of the documents, his adult children were attempting to settle the estate years later and son, James Wooten Keating, was buying the shares of his mother and siblings.
John Dunn Keating's widow married Toliver Martin and moved to Panola County, Texas, where they were enumerated in the 1860 Census with her Keating children and their Martin children. By 1870, she was a widow again and later married J. D. Robinson.
