Leonard E. Ames, age 86, formerly of De Soto, died February 20, 2008, in Monroe, Louisiana.

Born in Retreat, June 15, 1921, to Franklin Pierce Ames and Florence Louisa (Tower) Ames. Leonard served in the military from April 1941 to July 1945, and again from July 1949 to February 1950. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, including World War II battles in northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe. Leonard was graded as excellent in character and for proficiency in his duties. In letters sent to his twin sister, Lois Noel, he reported the details of his life as a soldier and all that entailed from the humdrum of everyday military life to the spine-tingling likelihood of battle, always interspersed with the comical antics of his fellow soldiers. After the war he worked as a heavy equipment operator and resided in Louisiana until his death.

Leonard is survived by his daughter and granddaughter, Cheryl Ramsey and Debra K. Ramsey of Louisiana; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Traister of Onalaska and Lois Noel of Prairie du Chien; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Frank, Percy, Ross, Eugene and Glen Ames; one sister, Bernice VanGundy; three grandchildren, Jerry G., Sherry L. and Billy R. Ramsey; and one great-grandchild, Michael G. Ramsey.

Interment at the Walnut Mound Cemetery, Retreat, rural De Soto, will be at a later date.
