Shirley L. Smith, 72, of Wapello, died at 7:17 a.m. Sunday, October 19, 2008, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born September 7, 1936 in Burlington she was the daughter of Wallace and Ruth Walker Broeker. At the age of two, her mother passed away. Her father and stepmother Ruth Wheeler Broeker then raised her. On April 26, 1953 she married Norton "Larry" Smith in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 17, 2005.
Mrs. Smith was a 1954 graduate of Morning Sun High School. She worked at Sylvania Company and then was secretary for the Wapello Elementary School for 25 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wapello, Melon Patch Quilt Guild of Muscatine, Wapello Study Club and Good Neighbors Club. She participated with Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life. Mrs. Smith was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing, yard work and traveling.
Survivors include two sons, Randy (Cathy) Smith of Wapello and John (Lisa) Smith of Oakville; two daughters, Debbie (Dave) Smith-Ulstad of Mason City and Joni (Randy) Hollingsworth of Morning Sun; eleven grandchildren, Christa Smith, Kelly Smith, Allison Ulstad, Jacob Ulstad, Tanner Hollingsworth, Maddie Hollingsworth, Samuel Hollingsworth, Joseph Hollingsworth, Megan Hardin, Darcy Hardin and Nathan Smith; three great grandchildren, Makayla Spurgeon, Kaleb Spurgeon and Makenna Spurgeon; brother-in-law, Elwood "Oddie" Marshall of DeWitt; cousin, Doris Walker of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and many special friends.
Her husband, parents, daughter Sherry, grandson Ryan, sister Beverly and stepmother preceded her in death.
