Helen Gertrude Eiswerth Hetzel, 97, of Williamsport, died Nov. 6, 2012, at Valley View Nursing Center, Montoursville, Pa.
Helen Eiswerth Hetzel, daughter of the late John E. and Mary Leuze Eiswerth, was born in Williamsport, Lycoming County, May 4, 1915. She grew up at 660 Henrietta Street on Dutch Hill. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1933 and was the valedictorian.
Helen was an employee of 20th Century Bakery as a young woman and of Grit Publishing before her marriage. She returned to the work force, as her children got older, as a legal secretary for the late George Orwig, Esq. During her employment as a legal secretary, she was also involved in the Epilepsy Society.
During her life, she was an active and lifelong member of St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church. As a young woman, she was often called out from school to sing for the requiem Masses. She was highly active in the Junior Catholic Daughters serving as a troop leader and officer and was one of the first two recipients in the Diocese of Scranton to receive the St. Anne Award for outstanding work with youth. She was part of the first class of Eucharistic Ministers for the Diocese of Scranton and was devoted for many years to serving those who were homebound or in a nursing facility. She was active as a lector and served on the Liturgy Committee for many years. She was a member of the Marian Choristers, the Penn Laurel Chapter of American Business Women's Association, Grit Retirees, Lycoming County Genealogical Society, Top of the Hill Club and the Montoursville Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Harry L. Hetzel, in 2008; a sister, Amelia Eiswerth Hart; and a brother, Francis Eiswerth. She is survived by her three children, Robert L. (Laura) of Louisville, Ky., Anne M. Houston (John) of Clifton, N.J., Barbara E. (Gil) of Blairstown, N.J.; and grandchildren, Maura E. Houston and Rory A. Houston of Clifton, N.J. She is also survived by her sister, Sylvia Eiswerth Haus of Williamsport, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 326 Washington Blvd., Williamsport, at 9:30 a.m. Thursday with her pastor, Msgr. Stephen McGough, officiating. Friends may call at the church lounge on Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions be made to St. Boniface Church or Saint Anthony's Center, 125 E. Willow St., Williamsport.
