Lindsey was an only child of Kenion Tarpley & Olive (Burns) Hulsey. Named in honor of his mother's first husband, Lindsey Peyton Thomas, who was killed on the first day of the Battle of Stones River, Murphreesboro, Rutherford Co, TN.

His father, Kenion Tarpley Hulsey, was first married to Millie Sanders. Kenion was b. 1816 GA, d. abt 1872 Jefferson Co, AL. After Millie's death, Kenion married Mrs Olive Burns Thomas on 4 Jan 1868 in Jefferson Co, AL, widow of Lindsey Peyton Thomas. Kenion was the son of Charles & Nancy (Pate) Hulsey. Millie was the daughter of Jonathan & Lucy (Adair) Sanders.

Older Hulsey half-siblings of Lindsey were Joseph Pate Hulsey, James Bart Hulsey, Needham Whit Hulsey, William T Hulsey, Hilborn Quincy Hulsey, Rev Thomas Russell Hulsey, John Shipley Hulsey, Kenion Tarpley Hulsey Jr, and Julius McCain Hulsey.
