Thelma Verlee Bearde, 94, died January 23, 2012 in Michigan. She was the daughter of Geoffrey Paul and Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey. Born February 12, 1917, in Davenport, Iowa, her early life was spent in the Iowa towns of Davenport, Crawfordsville, and New London. She was the first grandchild, with many to follow, of Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" and Hattie Mae "Harriett" (Moyers) Walker of Louisa County, Iowa.

Thelma's father died after an operation in 1931, and mother remarried to Roy Grant Fortner in 1932. Within several years they settled in Winterset, Iowa, and after a few more they moved again to Detroit, Michigan. Thelma lived the rest of her life in Michigan.

She was married to Lloyd Smith (aka Lloyd "Albert") Allen in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 15, 1936. He was the son of Albert Allen (1880-1957) and Sara Ann "Annie" Smith (1883-1911). His mother died when he was a few days old. Lloyd was raised by his paternal grandmother, Sophia M. (Duffy) Smith (1852-1930). Lloyd died September 9, 1972 in Redford, Michigan.

Thelma and LLoyd were the parents of three children. Their firstborn was Paul Lloyd Allen (spouse Joanne), followed by two daughters. Phyllis Ann (Allen) Pesci (1938-1998), the wife of Gerald Alexander Pesci (1938-1994), and Pamela Sue (Allen) Bacon (Dave).

Thelma remarried after Lloyd's death in 1972. Her second husband was John N. Bearde, the son of John Szarallas and Florence (Racz) Bearde. Born June 3, 1909 in Cleveland, Ohio, he died March 9, 1994 in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
