Ruby Ayscue Hammons, 86, of Ellenwood, GA, passed away on November 3, 2012, after a year long battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer.

Ruby was born on September 24, 1926, in Alert, North Carolina. She had lived in Georgia since 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Rev. Virgil Hammons, who died on January 3, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Pattie Lou Ayscue, and a sister and four brothers: Rosa Frances, Horace, Herman, Morris, and Ray Ayscue all of Henderson and Franklin Co., North Carolina.

Ruby is survived by a brother, Ralph (Melanie) Ayscue of Moyock, NC; a brother-in-law, James Hammons of Bois D'Arc, MO; sisters-in-law, Inez Underwood of Wichita, KS; Louise Ayscue of Henderson, NC; and Sarah Ayscue of Louisburg, NC. She is also survived by her four children: Millie (Ken) Manry of Ellenwood, GA; Dianne (Ed) Burts of Athens, GA; Mark (Suzanne) Hammons of Orlando, FL; and David Hammons of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren: Kara Manry and Matt Manry of Atlanta, GA; Krista Ollanketo and Kortni (Trent) Sanders of Athens, GA; Heather (Jeff) Robinson, Mark Hammons Jr., Matthew Hammons, and Casey Hammons of Orlando, FL; Jennifer Hammons of Las Vegas, NV; Brett (Tessia) Hammons of Augusta, GA; Jacklyn Hammons of Charleston, SC; and Lucas Hammons of Woodstock, GA. Her great-grandchildren are: Stefani, Kevin, and Kyle Ollanketo; Dylan Burts; Ragan and Jaxan Sanders; Dustin, Marissa, and Ryan Robinson; Destiny and Serenity Henry; Keira and Mason Hammons; and Kyler Hammons.

Her great-grandson, Calvin Johnson Hammons, died at age 2 ½ in April 2012 of drowning.

The family would like to thank her doctors and their staff at Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, and the nurses of Halcyon Hospice, especially Quanda and Charmaine, for their treatment and care.

The funeral service will be at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home in Calhoun, GA, on Wednesday, November 7th at 11:00 am. The pallbearers will be her grandsons. Burial will follow at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Calhoun, GA.

The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Aflac Cancer Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
