Nancy Caroline Prevett Blackwell was born in Illinois in September, 1868, according to the 1900 U.S. Census, to Emily "Millie" Bolling Chaney and Jesse Prevett.

In about 1869 Nancy Caroline's family moved from Illinois to Arkansas, where she grew up. She had eight half-brothers and sisters, including Absalom Jason Prevett, as well as three full brothers, David N, Jacob A "Jake," and Richard P Prevett.

On 9 Jan 1887 she married James Monroe Blackwell, in Randolph County, Arkansas. He was a half-brother to Alice Katherine Blackwell, who married Absalom J Prevett. Caroline and Monroe lived in Randolph and Lawrence Counties in Arkansas and had these children: Thomas, Jesse Marvin, Elsadia, Richard L, and William M H Blackwell.

In 1920 Nancy was living in La Junta, Otero County, Colorado, with her daughter-in-law, Alice "Allie" L. Ross Blackwell, who was the widow of Jesse M Blackwell. By 1921 Nancy had moved to Pueblo, Colorado. She was listed as a widow in the 1920 federal census and in at least 8 city directories for Pueblo, Colorado, in the years prior to her death. It is likely that James Monroe Blackwell died in Arkansas prior to her move to Colorado.

On the 1930 census Nancy is said to be taking in laundry and has Sadie's sons, James Willard "Jim" and Herman P "Jack" Jenkins with her. On the 1940 census she and Jack are with Jim and his wife, Betty Ruth Wagner Jenkins. Jim was a chemist in 1940, and Jack went on to be an attorney, who also was married to an attorney. In an article about his life Jack said his grandmother rescued him and his brother from an orphanage in Denver. He said that she did everything for them that she could, even though she had limited resources.

Her grave is unmarked; however, cemetery records make it possible to find where she is buried. Find A Grave contributor JPK located the grave and photographed it for this memorial.
