Raymond Hoffman, 92, longtime Buford, North Dakota farmer, died at his daughter's home in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on Tuesday afternoon, September 25, 2012.

Raymond Francis Hoffman was born to Albert and Elizabeth (Felhofer) Hoffman on Sept. 25th, 1920. He grew up on the family farm near Savage, Montana and attended Washington School and was a member of the 4-H Club and the boxing club. As a young man, he worked at the Hoffmanville Beet Dump and for various farmers. He first farmed on his own on the neighboring Pearl Barker place and then on the May place nearby. Ray attended a short course in agriculture at Montana State University in Bozeman.

In May of 1942 Raymond married Lucy Watterson of Fairview, Montana. A daughter, Judith Ann, was born in 1943; all of his 8 other children were born after the family moved to the Buford-Trenton Irrigation Project in the spring of 1946. At that time, there was no electricity, running water or phone line.

Raymond raised sugar beets, alfalfa and grain. He kept cattle on pasture, fed his own calves, and fed lambs.

In the early Buford-Trenton years, he organized a team of teen-age boys for the Rural Baseball League and was a catcher on the Trenton baseball team. Raymond encouraged his family to take part in the life of the community, actively supporting Trenton School, Happy Valley 4-H Clubs, and St. John's Catholic Church, where he was a trustee for 35 years. He managed his farm until he suffered a stroke in 1986, then his sons and grandsons took over the farming.

Raymond was predeceased by his son Michael in 1977.

The Everson Funeral Home of Williston is caring for the family.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday afternoon, September 29, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Williston by Father Joshua Ehli.

An Evening Vigil will be held Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Trenton.

Friends may call at Everson Funeral Home Friday from 1:00 until 5:00 pm, Saturday from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m., and at the church for the hour preceding the funeral.
