Herbert Martin Smith wed Lula 'Pearl' Lewis on 7 July 1923. Their first child, a son, Albert Marvin Smith, was born 6 Jul 1924. On 17 Apr 1926 Pearl gave birth to a 2nd son, Herbert, Jr. Four months later, on the 2nd of August, both baby and mother died of pulmonary tuberculosis. Pearl's sister, Janie 'Byrdie' Lewis, would later become Herbert's second wife. She and Herbert are the parents of Millard, Ida Laverne, Haskel Lewis, Stanley Jewell, Rebecca J. and Roland. They lost infants Edwin, James and Julia, who were all stillborn.
