Joseph Wheeler Brammer was born on October 8, 1842 in Lawrence County, Ohio. He was the son of Merida D. Brammer and Sarah Hamlin. He married Rachel Elma Brown on October 13, 1864 in Marion, Linn County, Iowa. He was the father of 8 children. Joseph Wheeler Brammer was a private in the 16th Regiment Company B of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the Civil War. He died November 12, 1920 in Benton County, Arkansas.
The 16th Regiment, Iowa Infantry was organized at Davenport on December 10, 1861. The 16th did SERVICE at the Battle of Shiloh, Tenn April 6-7, 1862. Advance on and siege of Corinth, Miss, April 29. Duty at Corinth and Bolivar till November.Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign, November 2, 1862. Moved to Memphis 1863 there the Battle of Port Gibson, Big Black River Crossing May 17, Siege of Vicksburg, Miss, May 18 to July 4 Expedition to Monroe, La, Battle of Atlanta, July 22,Battle of Bentonville. Surrender of Johnston and his army. March to Washington, D.C. via Richmond, VA April 29-May 20 Grand Review May 24. Mustered out July 19, 1865.
Regiment lost during service 7 Officers and 94 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 219 Enlisted men by disease. Total 323
