William Dennis Cartwright, 3rd of 4 children of Samuel Cartwright (1786-1856) and his 2nd wife, Minerva A Ellis (1818-1902). William was born in Wilson County, Tennessee July 12, 1849 and shortly thereafter, Samuel Cartwright moved his family to Butler County Kentucky, where they are first enumerated in the 1850 Census. William's father died 6/14/1856 and his mother then moved the family west to Bourbon County, Kansas where they are enumerated 1860, 1865, and 1870.
William married Margaret Jane "Jenna" Moss, daughter of Daniel Moss on December 25, 1873 and continued living in the Osage Township, Bourbon County, Kansas until they relocated and settled to the Clear Lake District (located north of Geraldine) in Choteau County, Montana in 1911.
