Johan George Ricker Family

Known deceased descendants of Johan George Ricker are included in this "Virtual Cemetery". I would be glad to update based on information and/or add other descendants you wish to provide. Although there may be other ancestors that have yet to be confirmed, to date I have found documentation of only one other Ricker family settling in the Putnam County area shortly after the founding of Glandorf Ohio. The 1860 Census in Greensburg Township showed that Johann George Ricker- my second great grandfather-and his family were living next door to the Bernard Herman and Catherine Ricker family. Johann George Ricker was born in 1818 in Germany. Although the search continues for documentation of parents and siblings from Germany of both George and Bernard Herman Ricker, it is my suspicion that George was either Bernard Herman's younger brother or nephew, and emigrated from Germany to Ohio after hearing of the opportunities in America through Bernard Herman's letters. Records from St. John the Baptist Church in Glandorf Ohio and other sources show the additional long term interaction between the two families after George's arrival in Putnam County. In 1850, George Ricker married Mary Anna Turner, who was born in May 1815, also in Germany. It is believed George and Mary Anna immigrated sometime after their 1850 marriage in Germany. Census records indicate their first child Maria Philomena (Wilhelmina) was born in Ohio in May 1853. As her baptismal entry was not found in the St. John the Baptist church records, it is possible that she was born during their journey to Glandorf. George purchased farmland west of Glandorf in Greensburg Twp., Putnam County in 1854. The 40 acre farmstead was located in the NW quadrant of what today is the intersection of Township Roads L and 14-J.George and Mary Anna were blessed with three more children between 1855 and 1860.George was killed on 22 December 1860 when the mud-sled he was driving crashed into the bridge at the Auglaize River. He was in the process of moving their household goods to a new 80-acre farmstead in Monterey Township north of Delphos and west of Ottoville. He was buried on 23 December 1860 in St. John the Baptist Pioneer Cemetery in Glandorf, Ohio, USA. Events leading up to George's death and how the family coped with the tragedy are retold in a short story written by family member Stephen Louis Ricker (John Anthony; John Herman; Herman Joseph; Johann George) entitled "A Day in the Life" , which was published in the Putnam County Historical Society Newsletter 100 in March of 2005.After George died, the Glandorf Parish priest, Fr. Anthony Kramer, objected to letting Mary and her four children move to the new Ottoville farm alone, as the area was considered to be in the wilderness at that period of time. On Tuesday, 9 April 1861 in St. John the Baptist in Glandorf, Ohio, USA, George's wife Mary Anna re-married to Louis Landwehr. Louis Landwehr was born on 25 April 1829 in Hannover, Glandorf Germany, and immigrated to the US in 1933. Shortly after the marriage, Louis, Mary Anna and the four children moved to the 80-acre farm located 1-1/2 miles southwest of Ottoville in Monterey Township. Herman H. Ricker, son of Bernard Herman Ricker, supported and assisted in the relocation as he was living in Delphos since 1952 and had worked there as a canal boat captain and later as a carpenter. Louis was listed as the head of a family on the 30 July 1870 and 11 June 1880 Census in Monterey Township, Ohio. An 1880 County atlas map lists the 80 acre tract in the NE quadrant of the County Road Q-26 and County Road 27 intersection to be owned by the "George Recker Estate".Mary Anna Turner- Ricker- Landwehr died on 12 April 1893, as Mary Landwehr. According to Immaculate Conception Church records, she was buried in Row 18 of the old section of the St. Mary's Cemetery in Ottoville on April 14, 1893. It is reported her tombstone is inscribed "Maria A. Landwehr- May 1915- April 12, 1893- wife of Louis- aged 77 Y 11 M". Now a widow, Louis Landwehr was still listed as the head of family on the 15 June 1900 Census in Monterey Township, Putnam County Ohio. Stepson Herman Henry Ricker, with wife Mary and their family, was listed as part of the household at that time, along with sons Louis B Ricker 15 years old and Joesph Ricker 13 years old. Louis Landwehr was still living with my great grandfather Herman Henry Ricker and the family at the time of the 1920 Census, and until his death on 24 Oct 1921. He was buried in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Ottoville on October 27, 1921. The inscription of "Gone but not Forgotten" is fitting tribute to this man.
