55TH ALABAMA INFANTRY

Organized at Port Hudson in February 1863 with men from Calhoun,Cherokee,Jackson,Madison and Marshall Counties. They fought at Baker's Creek and Jackson,Miss. The Regiment was attached to the Army of Tennessee in the Spring of 1864 and suffered heavy losses in the retreat from Georgia. After many skirmishes, the 55th participated in the Winter Campaign in Tennessee, with a long list of casualties at Franklin and Nashville. The Regiment surrendered at Greensboro, NC April 26,1865.
