Charles H. Ruter, a well known business man of the city, died Saturday at his home on Upper Fourth, near Market street. He had been ill of chronic bowel trouble and was confined to his home for several days. Mr. Ruter had been engaged in the grocery business at Fourth and Market streets for a number of years and had a wide acquaintance. He was 53 years old and leaves two sons. He was a member of New Albany Lodge of Elks and Centenary Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Ruter was born in this city and belonged to one of the pioneer families of the city. His grandfather, the Rev. Calvin Ruter, was a noted Methodist minister during the early days of Indiana, while his father, Captain Martin Ruter, was a famous steamboat commander in the prosperous steamboating era of fifty years ago. He was noted for his sagacity in business affairs and by his industry and enterprise he had accumulated a comfortable fortune. - New Albany Public Press 22 Dec 1903
