Our sweet mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Helen Gardner Adamson returned to our Father in Heaven on September 11, 2012 after a full, well-lived life. She was 96 years old.
Helen was born May 23, 1916 in Lovell, Wyoming. She was the fourth of six children born to Angus Cannon Gardner and Mary Caroline Whipple Gardner. The family later moved to Lehi, Utah where Helen graduated from Lehi High School. She was vice-president of the student-body and participated in the glee club, posture club, drama, and athletics.
Helen married Virgil Myers Adamson August 15, 1936. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on August 14, 1959. They were blessed with a son, Edwin (Ted), in 1938. Helen was a hard and productive worker all of her life. She worked at Cooks Ice Cream Parlor, A.F. Dry Cleaners, Utah Poultry (candling eggs), and finally at The Utah State Training School where she progressed from switchboard operator to executive secretary and assisted four superintendents. She retired in 1982 after 22 years of service and received a letter of appreciation and commendation for outstanding service to the State of Utah from Governor Scott Matheson. She was loved and respected by all who worked with her.
Helen was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Helen loved family parties, playing her player piano, shopping, sewing, crocheting, and ceramics. She made many dolls for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very active and enjoyed long walks, riding her exercise bike, and walking on her treadmill. She had a strong heart in more ways than one. She also enjoyed traveling and went on many trips with the Good Sam Club and with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Virgil, and her five siblings: Vilo Bartlow, Ruth Curtis, Rulon Gardner, Rex Gardner, and Marlow Gardner. She is survived by her son Edwin (Ted) and his wife Sherilyn, as well as four grandchildren: Russell (Barb) Adamson, Shawna (Brett) Nattress, Angella (Eric) Vernon, and Jeana (Corwin) Harmon and 21 (almost 22) great-grandchildren. She was looking forward to the arrival of her first great-great-grandchild in December. Her family was the greatest joy of her life.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 11:00 am at the American Fork 7th Ward Chapel, 688 West 500 North, American Fork, Utah. Family and friends may call Tuesday, evening from 6:00-8:00 pm at Warenski Funeral Home, 1776 North 900 East, American Fork, Utah and Wednesday morning from 10:00-10:45 am prior to services at the church.
