Canton-Mariam S. Bethel Howerter, 83, formerly of Canton and Bartonville, passed away at 2:15 pm, Thursday, September 6, 2012 at her residence in Springfield, MO.
She was born on July 15, 1929 in Pittsburg, PA to Willis and Mildred Tubbs Weed.
Mariam married Kenneth Howerter on December 20, 1986 in Ellisville. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2007.
Surviving are three children Marsha (Jerry) Rogers of Republic MO., Cheryl (Jack) Ebersold of Springfield, MO, Carol Bethel of Hollister, MO.; three step children, Donald (Nancy) Howerter of Washington, Shirley, (Bernard) Shoop of Brimfield, and Theresa (Jeff) Green of Aurora, IL. Also surviving are three grandchildren, eight step grandchildren and thirteen step great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and one son Richard.
Mariam was an elementary teacher at the Monroe Grade School for 7 years and at the Bartonville Grade School retiring in 1986. She was a past member of the Wiley Lutheran Church and a current member of the Hood United Methodist Church in Republic MO. She was the past president and treasurer of the Bartonville Women's club, a 25 year member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, a 50 year member and past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star #672 and the Eastern Star Chapter #370 in Republic, MO, a member of the Skirt and Shirt Square Dance Club in Canton, a hospital volunteer at Proctor and Graham Hospitals and a treasurer of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at 10 am the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a visitation from 5-7, on Monday, September 10, 2012 at the funeral home with an Eastern Star service at 6:45 pm. Burial will be at the Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
Memorials may be made to the Diabetes foundation.
