Caroline was born to Oliver Dickinson Hunt and Harriet Makepeace Hamilton Hunt. Her family moved to Amherst, Massachusetts around 1860. Her paternal grandparents lived in Amherst, and her father grew up there. The family had a large white home built not far from the town center. Caroline lived in it from the time she was 3 years old until shortly before her death. The home is now part of the faculty housing program at Amherst College.

Her obituary indicates that she attended Wellesley College for three years. After her father's death in 1899, Caroline took over the family insurance business.

Caroline's name does not appear on the family gravestone. However, there is space and it seems as though her name should have been carved. I did check with the cemetery, and she is in fact buried with her parents and brother at this location.
