According to his obituary, Oliver taught school until an affliction of the throat compelled him to give up teaching.
On September 17, 1856 he married Harriet Makepeace Hamilton. Together, they had two children - Caroline Town Hunt and William Alanson Hunt. O. D. Hunt, as he was often called, owned a shop dealing coal and wood stoves as well as fire insurance.
He was also a town selectman, town clerk, and treasurer of Amherst. In addition, he was involved with many other aspects of town business.
The Hunt family lived in a large white home that Oliver had built around 1860. It is not far from the Amherst town center. The house is now part of the Amherst College faculty housing program, and is aptly named, The Hunt House.
