He was the last survivor of fourteen children of Casper and Catherine {MOSER} HASLER, and was born in Taylor Township, this county, October 10, 1853, and died at the home of his son, Verl HASLER, in the forenoon of May 17, 1937, aged eighty-three years, seven months and seven days.
He was married to Sarah CHANEY September 17, 1874, and to this union were born ten children, one of whom died in infancy; the remaining nine lived to manhood and womanhood and now reside in homes of their own. The are Mrs. Deshia SUMMERVILLE and Mrs. Pearl DOWDEN, near Scotland, Mrs. Lula Smith, Chrisman, Illinois; Mrs. Cora COMBS, Koleen; Mrs. Lessie REED, Mrs. Ida WRIGHT, Lester, Vactor, and Veral HASLER, near Bloomfield.
Mr. HASLER was born, reared, married and reared his own family near the place his parents first settled when they came here from Switzerland, nearly a century ago; he was a careful farmer and lover of good cattle and other farm livestock from which occupation he not only made a living for himself and large family but was able to lay by something for the “rainy day day,” which comes to all. He was a kind and jovial disposition, which made him many friends.
Eighteen years ago, after all the children were married he sold the old homestead and purchased the childhood home of his wife, where they lived idyllic companionship until on July 12, 1929, when she was called home.
The heart-broken husband then left the home and lived for four years with his oldest son, Lester, and family, who did everything for his comfort and happiness, but the age-old call of “Home Sweet Home” finally overcame all else and he went back home and stayed there until about five months ago when he went to the home of another son, Verl, and family. He had been in failing health for some time and seriously sick for the last ten days. Everything that loving hands and medical aid was done, but to no avail.
A few days ago he called the attending children around him and told them he was at peace with his Savior and ready to go, and in a few tender words and a shake of the hand he bade them goodbye.
Survivors beside the above mentioned children include thirty-one grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in the Flater Cemetery near his home.
“Dear old Dad from us is gone; his voice forever stilled; a place is vacant in our home that never can be filled.”
The funeral of Ed HASLER was conducted Wednesday afternoon at the home of Verl HASLER in Bloomfield. A large crowd was in attendance.
